VELVET MAKING A COMEBACK

Hold everything! Before you go cleaning out your closet in preparation for the fall season and (hopefully) donating what you think is out of style, hear this: Velvet is back. Yes, I said velvet. So don’t go giving those gems from the 90’s away, because they are about to be your new statement pieces for this season. Following the comeback of the onesie, high-waisted bottoms, and crop tops, velvet is back in full-swing. And whether you’re a bit skeptical of the trend or you’re willing to wear it head-to-toe, there is an option for everyone out there to sport the latest trend.

A trendy shoe is always a sure-fire way to make a statement. These Steve Madden booties combine velvet with a chunky heel, and with a short shaft, they can easily be worn with anything from skinny jeans to short skirts. They even come in a variety of colors: Mushroom (pictured), Light Blue, Navy, Dark Green, Brown, and Burgundy. Don’t let the price tag of $70-$100 scare you away. A quality shoe should be viewed as an investment, as it can be worn for many occasions, many seasons, and many years.

If you’re feeling a bit more daring, you can never go wrong with a skater mini-skirt. It really is one of the most versatile pieces that you can add to your closet. Dress it up with sheer black tights, pumps, a mock neck bodysuit, an updo, and long-drop earrings for a sleek look. Or, keep it casual with flats or converse and a short sleeve shirt. With options in Red (pictured), Black, and Green, it can be suitable for any occasion from Girls Night Out to mid-week coffee with an old friend. Plus, for less than $15, you can’t really go wrong in adding it to your closet.

Speaking of bodysuits, I ordered this deep v-neck bodysuit from Roselux the second I saw it. Between the rich color, neckline, and long sleeves, I just could not resist. It comes in Dark Blue (pictured), Red, and Black, and every color would look absolutely stunning paired with skinny jeans, strappy heels, and some statement earrings.

My personal favorite piece in the reemergence of velvet are dresses, particularly casual ones. They can easily be dressed up or dressed down in any season, and offer a fun opportunity to experiment with layering various textures. This shirt-dress would look killer with a short, black leather jacket and some fun heels, or even keep the arms bare (I love love LOVE the length of the sleeves!) and pair it with some over-the-knee suede boots. Bonus points if you can even incorporate a little bit of lace! This dress by HIKARE comes in Black (pictured), Red, Light Pink, and Gold for less than $25, meaning you don’t have to feel bad if you can’t settle on just getting one color.

Whether you’re the type that is comfortable playing it safe or you’re one to make bold choices when it comes to fashion, there really is an option for everyone out there to incorporate velvet into their wardrobe. And on top of that, there are options at every price point. When I am a bit skeptical on the longevity of a trends, I tend to look for pieces that are lower in price so that my wallet isn’t too upset with me if the trend is more touch-and-go. But with velvet, I have confidence that it is here to stay. When designers like Givenchy, Stella McCartney, and Balmain dominated the runway in head-to-toe velvet at Paris Fashion week in Fall of 2016, it was clear that the crushed fabric had made a comeback. And now that it is a full year later, we are seeing the trend hit major department stores all around the country, from Von Maur and Bloomingdale’s to Macy’s and BonTon, making it undeniable that the staple fabric from the 90’s is back, and better than ever.
